The Quiet Lens: a photography holiday with Andrew Scriven

Unhurried, unspoilt, unforgettable. Join us next spring (2026) for an immersive photography holiday in the heart of the Alpujarras, with a group of just 8 participants. Casa Ana and its stunning surroundings will be your base.

Next holiday:
Dates: 9 – 15 May 2026

Led by Andalusia based photographer Andrew Scriven and supported by expert local mountain guides, this carefully curated week is perfectly timed—when the valleys are at their greenest and bursting with wildflowers. Each day begins and ends with golden light, ideal for walking straight from the house into a landscape of deep canyons, tumbling waterfalls, and layered mountain ridges glowing with colour. Think sunsets that rival Rothko paintings—and a chance to capture them with your camera.

To book this holiday email us at info@casa-ana.com and we will send you a booking form.

“What made it so brilliant is very much down to the tutor and his approach to photography (and life)... Andrew Scriven. As soon as you meet Andrew you realise he is one of the most genuine, gentle, kind hearted, empathetic, compassionate and intelligent people you will ever meet.”

About the photography holiday

Throughout the week, you’ll explore a timeless world of whitewashed villages, winding mule tracks, and hand-built terraces where life continues much as it has for centuries. These unspoilt communities are perfect for striking black-and-white photography, offering bold compositions and rich contrasts at every turn. From stone streets and rustic doorways to shadows cast by almond trees and abandoned mills, you’ll craft a personal body of work that blends the graphic with the poetic.

In the middle of the week, we’ll take a day trip to Granada, where you’ll have the chance to photograph the majestic Alhambra and its exquisite gardens—an architectural masterpiece set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The intricate details and lush greenery offer endless opportunities for stunning images..

The remainder of the week will be back in the Alpujarras where the experience is deepened by encounters with the people who call this valley home. You’ll be invited to photograph village life and craftspeople keeping ancient traditions alive—all approached with care, respect, and a mindful, unhurried rhythm.

Who’s it for?

We welcome photographers at all levels from beginner to expert. With moderate fitness, this holiday invites you to walk for a few hours each day, embrace the shifting mountain light, and connect with your creative eye. More than a workshop, this is a chance to slow down, look deeply, and immerse yourself in a landscape shaped by time, light, and tradition.

The House

Staying at Casa Ana is like staying at a private house, simple, comfortable and welcoming. A place where you can feel at home.

The old Alpujarra-style buildings are arranged around a Moorish courtyard garden, planted with wisteria and roses. A few steps through the garden take you to the terraces with breathtaking views along the valley and into the mountains.

In the bedrooms we’ve kept the original chestnut beams with white walls and terracotta floors, comfortable beds, quality linens and a scattering of rugs.

The bathrooms are modern with rain showers, huge mirrors and hand-made tiles inspired by the Moorish designs of the Alhambra. A large sitting room gives onto a shady terrace with superb mountain views.

The Architect-designed dining room and kitchen are open plan and welcoming, giving onto a secluded south-facing terrace. For winter warmth there is underfloor central heating throughout (even in the bathrooms) and a fireplace in the sitting room.

“Casa Ana is a perfect place to bring a small group, especially for walking, writing, or personal development – you can have the place to yourselves. The mix of indoor and outdoor spaces provides a conducive and pleasing environment for this kind of activity. If you bring a group of 6 or more, you can opt to have lunches and dinners included, as we did, and I highly recommend this.”

The Garden

Casa Ana was made for outdoor living. Everywhere rooms open onto the Moorish garden, the courtyard or the terraces.

There are big shady pergolas where you can relax with a glass of wine, or a cup of coffee and a good book and secluded sunny corners where you can soak up the Andalucian sun and do nothing at all. At night you can sit out, gaze at the stars and watch the moonrise over the mountains.

Everywhere there are panoramic views, the scent of jasmine and orange blossom, and maybe the sound of goatbells or a nightingale or the river far below.

It’s what makes Casa Ana special.

“The Casa itself is beautiful, and has been lovingly and sympathetically restored... Anne and the staff couldn’t possibly be any friendlier. The surroundings are also stunning.”
