Winter Walking with Chris Stewart and friends

A guided walking holiday in the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada National Park. Join writer Chris Stewart and expert guides for a week of walking, sunshine, snow and almond blossom, with gastronomic cuisine at Casa Ana

Next holiday:

15 – 22 February 2020

About the holiday

February is a wonderful time to walk in this area: the high mountain peaks glisten with caps of snow, and skies are the purest blue. Lower down there are almond orchards in full bloom trumpeting that spring is here, whilst the tang of woodsmoke reaches you from village firesides. It’s warm during the day and crisp at night and it doesn’t get dark until 7 o’clock.

Your guide and host Chris Stewart (author of Driving over Lemons) will lead you on walks through almond orchards in full flower, and more walks through woodlands and meadows to gaze at the snow-capped mountains and the deep gorges for which the Alpujarra is famous.

Your guides also include experts from Spanish Highs, one of the most experienced guiding companies in the area. Plus Anne, owner of the accommodation, herself a keen walker with stories to tell about getting out of London and setting up a guest house in Spain's most remote and beautiful mountains.

The week includes a day's snow-shoeing in the high mountains (no matter if you've never done it before - it's easy to master and great fun, and all equipment is provided). There's also a day's walking down on the Mediterranean coast with lunch on the beach, and other walks exploring the dramatic valleys and white villages of this unspoilt region.

After a day’s walking return to Casa Ana for mulled wine and roasted chestnuts by the wood-burning stove whilst your chef for the week prepares delicious dinners.

Highlights include:

  • Snow-shoeing in the high sierras (equipment provided)
  • A walk through almond orchards in full flower with writer Chris Stewart (in the Contraviesa hills)
  • Two walks in the stunning scenery of the Alpujarra: along the Poqueira valley and into the hidden gorge of Busquistar
  • Down on the coast, a walk on the cliffs in conservation area and lunch at a restaurant on the beach
  • Wine tasting at Casa Ana. Sample wines from Andalucia with wine expert Tom Goetz
  • Gourmet dinners at Casa Ana

(Please note that we may have to modify the programme through changes in weather and other circumstances beyond our control.)

More Reviews

"Anne opened the gate to Casa Ana and we were welcomed and charmed in good measure right from the start. The whole property was a joy to stay in. A pleasant room, an airy lounge with refreshment facilities, a spectacular terrace, a pristine garden and a cosy dining room provided a beautiful venue and base for our winter walking holiday.

As an avid walker myself I was delighted to be introduced to this wonderful walking country by Pied Piper Chris Stewart who, with guides from Spanish Highs led us on some of the finest walks you might experience.

From breakfast to bedtime we enjoyed great company hosted by warm, witty and knowledgeable hosts Chris and Anne. The team preparing our meals and looking after us were also second to none. It was great to be spoilt.

Yes, a splendid time was had by all."

"My son and I have just returned from a winter walking holiday at Casa Ana and it really is as good as everyone says! A delightful stay in a wonderful location, with superb food and wine provided by a very skilled team. The walking trips were very well organised led by knowledgeable guides with tremendous variety - villages 5000 feet up in the mountains to the beautiful coastline near Nerja. We were also very fortunate to have the company of Chris Stewart sharing with us his interest and expertise of all aspects of life in the Alpujarras.

I want to especially thank Anne for making us so welcome and giving us such a memorable stay and many happy memories."

"We just wanted to say a very big thank-you for another lovely week at Casa Ana. As with our Walking Over Lemons trip last May, the walking, weather, company, accommodation, hospitality and food were superb. A big thank-you also to Richard, Andrew and Kiersten, and most of all to that Alpujarran Cultural Icon, Chris Stewart."
