In October 2006, for the first time, we ran 3 weeks of walking holidays based at Casa Ana. They went so well that we will be running all our autumn walking holidays from there in 2007. What worked for us was the size and location of the house, the price, the style and comfort, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the sheer beauty of the area.
The Alujarras features some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe: even the mountain roads in from Granada or the coast are spectacular. It forms the heart of the ancient Moorish civilisation and we liked the way that this is reflected in the design of Casa Ana. It's a 400 year old house which has been carefully restored, combining features such as original chestnut roof beams and Moorish tiles with modern comforts like rain showers and underfloor central heating. It was good to be able to lead our groups on walks which began at the door of Casa Ana, through majestic mountain scenery, then at the end of the day, relax in style and comfort in a beautiful house which we had all to ourselves.
It was worth coming from California to stay at Casa Ana. It is a wonderful place to run a personal development workshop. The accommodations are beautiful, private and comfortable and the surrounding countryside is spectacular, with views of the mountains and old persimmon and fig orchards and gardens and white houses hugging the cliff sides. Our group enjoyed the delicious family style meals and walking the ancient hiking trails between the adjacent villages. And as a contrast, a visit to nearby Granada, with its beautiful architecture, Alhambra Palace, flamenco performances and tapas bars. I look forward to coming back next autumn.
Staying in Casa Ana was a delight. The high valley landscape is beautiful: open and secluded, stimulating and restful. Our regular rhythm of activity and reflection, writing, talking and walking, was great for body and mind. Breaking the routine was also good! Exploring the nearby villages by bus and the local tavernas on foot. Early morning and early evening are the best times for the circuit of the valley and its mountain top. The house and the food were a treat and the sociable atmosphere was a pleasure, encouraging, supportive and often inspiring. I returned with honey, ceramics, jewellery and a few thousand words of fiction.
Casa Ana is an idyllic place, tucked away in a tiny village in the heart of the Alpujarras. If you want peace and quiet and breath-takingly dramatic mountain scenery, this is the place for you. The 400 year old village house has been sensitively and beautifully restored - the decoration and furnishing are simple but very comfortable and pleasing on the eye. And the bathrooms are excellent. We had a fantastic few days walking in the area in warm winter sunshine and I definitely intend to return - as soon as I can!
You travel up and up into the mountains and arrive at a quiet Spanish village, step through the street door of Casa Ana into a beautifully designed house, with stunning views, comfortable ensuite rooms and plenty of space for both wonderful shared meals and quiet corners to sit alone enjoying the peace. We walked to villages just the right distance away, taking photos along the way of goatherds and laden donkeys. I had a wonderful week, returning home energised and relaxed. It is a superb venue for being creative, for personal development work, and for recovering your soul again. Well done Anne for creating and preserving a space for body and soul.
Casa Ana is the perfect place for a yoga & meditation retreat.... set in a small tranquil village with stunning views, the moment you step into these beautiful surroundings you can feel the stress of every day life melting away and a new energy forming. At Casa Ana you get spoiled completely.... fresh air, fabulous food, and the comforts of feeling at home away from home. Rest, Relax and Rejuvenate are the words that come to mind as soon as you walk through the doors.
