Getting to Casa Ana

Explore Spain’s Undiscovered Wines

with wine writer Tom Goetz

Next holiday (6 nights):

8 – 14 September 2018

27 April – 3 May 2019

14 – 20 September 2019

Spain is currently undergoing a silent wine revolution.

Little known areas and grape varieties are starting to catch the attention of wine experts.

There is much more to Spanish wine than the famous Rioja appellation and its Tempranillo grape. In Andalucia alone appellation-variety pairings include for example Axarquia and Romé, Alpujarra and Vijiriega, Málaga and Moscatel de Alejandría or Cádiz and Tintilla de Rota. These wines are becoming increasingly valued and highly rated by wine critics and enthusiasts.

Throughout Andalucia, a growing number of boutique wineries are producing exciting wines – with small quantities and high quality. These so-called terroir wines are not made for supermarkets but for wine lovers who are looking for difference, quality and the stories behind the wine.

The Programme

The Alpujarra, where Casa Ana is located, is way off-track from the “big worlds” of Spanish wine including Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rueda. But the Alpujarra’s slate soils, its vineyards set at the highest altitudes in Europe and a new, pioneering generation of professional wine-makers provide a fantastic setting to explore these unique and high-quality Mediterranean mountain wines.

This 6-night holiday takes place during the harvesting season and includes 3 days of visits to vineyards and wineries and 2 days in and around Casa Ana with three professional wine tastings led by Tom Goetz, plus local trips. The wine tastings introduce red and white wines from all over Spain, then progress to Andalucia solely with red, white and rose wines from 7 out of 8 provinces. In addition, dinners at Casa Ana will explore food and wine pairings.

Over three days, we’ll visit at least four quality wineries in the Alpujarra-Contraviesa, Sierra de los Guájares and Granada area. As well as tasting the wines we’ll meet the producers themselves and understand their philosophies of wine-making. And last but not least, we’ll have a guided tour in the historic city of Granada followed by a wine and tapas tour.
